a non-governmental organization strategically based in St. Andrew’s parish. The organization recognizes Grenada’s and her small neighboring islands’ turbulent transition into globalization. Grenada has grappled with an influx of and preference for thing external- food, clothing, lifestyles- accompanied by a crash in traditional agricultural exports. Under these conditions, instability has increased as a new socio-economic order unfolds. In particular, the lack of formal education and skills training for a large percentage of the rural population has led to limited choices, increased poverty and deepened social deterioration. In 1996, recognizing that this process was at work, Dr. Dessima Williams and a committed core of individuals, founded GRENED. Its purpose was and is directed to erasing the social damage and exclusion that results from lack of education in Grenada’s changing environment.
